Wil Wheaton went along with this meme a couple days ago, and I'm picking it up because I'm reading a pretty phenomenal one right now.
What book am I currently reading? Buddha, Volume 4: The Forest of Uruvela by Osamu Tezuka
Is it good so far? Holy crap yes. Tezuka's eight-volume, 3,000-page retelling/interpretation of the life of Siddhārtha Gautama is considered a masterpiece of comics, and as I approach the halfway mark (I'm reading the entire series back-to-back), I have no reason to disagree. This is a massive, epic story, and Tezuka touches on almost every genre imaginable, veering between or combining romance, adventure, philosophy, action, sex, comedy, and tragedy. There's a really endearing weirdness and irreverence to the storytelling, but the sillier moments (the author's cameo, some comically anachronistic references) never seem out of place or forced, and that's a real credit to Tezuka's storytelling mastery.
If you think you might want to check out the series, start with Buddha, Volume 1: Kapilavastu. If you do, let me know what you think!
How about you? What are you reading? Is it good so far?
